Marc Schmitz (1963, Hamburg - 2023) was a German conceptual and multidisciplinary artist who left a significant mark in the contemporary art world. His diverse and rich education played a crucial role in shaping his unique and innovative approach to art. He began studying philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and later at the Freie Universität in Berlin. In 2000, he attended the Kunstakademie München, studying Multimedia under the guidance of the professor and artist Klaus vom Bruch, and the following year he continued this study at the Akademie für Neue Medien in Berlin.

Schmitz’s artistic production is highly varied, spanning across different mediums, including painting, installation, object, video, and land art. He always aimed to invite viewers into a constructive dialogue through his creations. His research focused on the immediacy of encounter in spatial relationships, challenging the limits of different media, and exploring their foundations, conveying sensuality and thought in his works.

Working in series reflects Schmitz’s habit of delving into different topics, seeking to understand the connection between his philosophical vision and his role as an artist. A distinctive aspect of his style is the demonstration of the corporeal presence of paint — its consistency, emotional aura, and mutual influence. His skill in engaging with materials in a creative and meaningful manner explains his “nonlinear” artistic method creation.

This artistic approach led him to international exhibitions and inclusion in public and private collections — the National Art Gallery in Beijing, The Swatch Collection in Shanghai, to name a few. He exhibited in noteworthy locations, including the TEDA Contemporary Art Museum in Tianjin, the Zendai MoMA in Shanghai, and the Concert Hall in Perth in Australia. His work was recognized with the first prize at the Art For Expo 2000 World Expo, the jury prize at the 10th Cairo Biennial in 2006 and even a special award at the Busan Biennial two years earlier.

An important chapter in Marc’s career involved participating in exhibitions in Asia after the China Art Exposition International in Beijing, in 1998. He explored countries such as Japan, Korea, China, and Mongolia, bringing his unique perspective to diverse cultural contexts. Regarding the latter, he conducted research in remote areas and explored the Arctic region, living and experiencing the nomadic culture in numerous journeys and projects in the Mongolian steppes. Moreover, he was an initiator and director of the Biennial Land Art Mongolia.

Marc Schmitz’s art showcased incredible versatility and depth, making his artworks an excellent choice for any art collection. International recognition and participation in prestigious events emphasize the universal significance and appreciation for his work. His exploration of cultures worldwide adds a unique cultural and narrative value to his creations.
