ANGELA LYN
Angela Lyn (*1955, Windsor, England) is a citizen of the world, born to an English mother and a Chinese father. In 1968, her family emigrated to the United States, and four years later, she traveled to Taiwan in search of her Chinese roots. There, she attended Fu-Jen University, learning Chinese and painting. After returning to England, she studied fine art at Southampton College of Art and Byam Shaw (now Central St Martins College of Arts and Design in London), enriching her artistic vocabulary.

In 1978, she moved to Switzerland, where she began attending the Master Class in painting under the guidance of Franz Fedier at Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel. However, after living on three different continents, it was in 1994 that she finally found a place she could call home, in Lugano, in the canton of Ticino. Almost paradoxically, Angela Lyn rediscovered in this town in Italian-speaking Switzerland the light and landscapes of her Asia, awakening images and memories linked to China and transmitted by her father.

Her large atelier, framed by Himalayan cedar trees overlooking the Lake of Lugano, becomes the crucible for her artistic exploration. Landscape, with its attention to detail, serves as the foundational basis for her inquiry. Lyn’s subjects, whether the intricate details of cedar trees or the exchange between mountain and sky, demand time, reflection, and persistence. The essence of Angela Lyn’s artistic identity lies in her cultural diversity, seamlessly weaving together her Eastern and Western heritage. As a painter, she aspires to construct a distinctive and captivating language, examining the universal and prompting viewers to contemplate the complexities of the world.

Angela has a number of solo and group exhibitions, showcasing her works and enhancing private and corporate collections in Europe, America, and Asia. Among these numerous exhibitions, notably remarkable is “On the Edge of Time” of 2022 at Villa Arconati in Milan. The artist explored what unites people over time, reflecting on the past lives of those who inhabited the baroque residence and contemporary challenges such as the pandemic, climate emergency, and energy crisis. Through site-specific installations, she established a dialogue between her life and the history of the villa, bridging the gap between past and present, while also raising existential questions about the future. The exhibition became a sort of personal exploration, where the sense of time and memory vividly emerges from the works in harmony with the surrounding spaces.

Angela Lyn, when speaking about her artistic philosophy, declares, “There is no greater privilege and responsibility than to enter the world of another person”. In a culture dominated by rapid change, she consciously chooses painting as her primary medium. For Lyn, the enduring quality of painting, its immediacy, and its demands on the physical, mental, and spiritual realms serve as conduits for exploring the essence of human connection.
